INTRODUCTION
Established in 1994, the Graduate Institute
of Biotechnology is a conglomerate of collegial and lively community of
researchers devoted to providing a congenial atmosphere for research and
learning. The mission is to prepare students who seek a master’s
degree with skills and knowledge to perform various biotechnological research
projects and to train students who seek doctoral degree to become independent
researchers, able to tackle various biotechnological issues.
Core research topics include (1) molecular interaction between pathogens and hosts, (2) characterization of genes involved in the development of specific plant organs, and (3) a variety of application-oriented projects including protein and enzyme technology, vaccine development, ingredient identification from Chinese herb medicines, and creating transgenic plants able to resist draught, pathogens or to delay senescence.

HISTORY
The Institute,
under the College of Agriculture and Natural Resource, National Chung Hsing
University, was established in 1994 by the name of the
Graduate Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology. The Institute changed her name to the
Graduate Institute of Biotechnology in 2002
due to the expansion of the conducting researches that were no longer limited
to agricultural issues. In 2004, Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) was
set up at Academia Sinica. The Institute was appointed to work with TIGP to run
the program named Molecular and Biological Agricultural Sciences. The mission
of the Institute
is to prepare students who seek a master’s degree with skills and knowledge to
perform various biotechnological experiments and to train students who seek
doctoral degree to become independent researchers, able to tackle various
biotechnological issues.
EDUCATION FEATURES
The key feature of the Institute is her ability to improve the agricultural production and better utilize the natural resources by using modern biotechnologies. The faculty and students have devoted themselves to research and the creation of an excellent academic environment. Many outstanding research reports have been produced since 1994. The outcomes has made the Institute one of the best teaching institutes in the areas of plant molecular virology and plant molecular development in Taiwan.
